Once upon a time, there lived a family of orangutans: Papa Gus, Mama Mia, Kiki, Tinara, and Baby Nana. They lived in a tree house deep inside the rainforest in Kalimantan. Their house was made of figs, roots, leaves, and some flowers for decoration.

Mama Mia carried sleepy Baby Nana on her back as she made banana chips for the Banana Festival the next day. Tinara, as usual, helped Mama. Meanwhile Papa Gus relaxed in his favorite chair, sipping tea. But Kiki was SO bored! He laid down on the green carpet and tried to read. But being an active sort of orangutan, he couldn’t stand reading for long. He closed the book and decided to take a walk.

Kiki wandered outside, letting the door bang behind him. “Hmmm, now where should I go,” he wondered as he started down the path. Before he knew it, he passed Mega the Elephant’s house. Mega was Kiki’s very best friend.

“Hi, Meg! Come and play!” Kiki called out happily.

“I can’t Kiki,” said Mega with disappointment, “I have to help my mom decorate this table for the festival tomorrow.” So Kiki continued his journey alone.

Soon, Kiki passed through Mr. Daisuke’s banana orchard. He gazed upward and saw many bunches of ripe, yellow bananas. The sweet smell of bananas hung heavily in the air! “I’m in heaven!” said Kiki as he breathed deeply.

Suddenly, a loud voice gruffly interrupted Kiki from his daydream. “Hey you, get out of here!” The mean voice was none other than the grumpy, old Mr. Daisuke.

Kiki ran down the orchard path to the gate and quickly left the orchard. He continued on his way with the smell of heavenly, ripe bananas still lingering in his memory. A moment later, “Bbbbrrgghhh!” Kiki’s tummy began to rumble, and he felt sharp pangs of hunger. “Bbbbrrrgghh.....Bbbrrrgghhh!”

Just then Kiki passed the house of Mrs. Ika, a good friend of his mother’s. He saw a banana tree with bunches of ripe fruit hanging just under the leaves. “Bbbrrrghhh!” Kiki couldn’t resist! He looked left, and then right. “Hmm.. no one’s here. No one will know...” he thought with a smile.

Kiki was a good climber, the fastest in the forest. In no time, all the bananas were on the ground at his feet. Kiki began eating them with a happy smile on his face. It was quite an afternoon! The sun beat down on his head, and it was awfully hot. So Kiki decided to walk home. He took the bananas and ate them along the way.
