      GUM END

      NOTE TO PARENTS AND TEACHERS

This book is a purely inspirational, semi-fictional narrative. It describes a personal experience of

performing ‘Umrah from a young child’s perspective. It is not a comprehensive guide. The rhyming text

will serve as an aide to the child’s memory and the poster and paper dolls provide opportunities for

reinforcing learning, but it is expected that parents or teachers will discuss and elaborate further on the

text and illustrations according to the child’s age and level of understanding.

This book cannot replace a book of fiqh to prepare an older child or adult for the step-by-step obligations

of making ‘Umrah according to a particular school of thought.

Points that you may wish to highlight in your discussions with children include:

1.‘Umrah differs from Hajj in that ‘Umrah can be done anytime and completed in a few hours,

whereas Hajj is completed over five days during the month of Dhu’l-Hijjah.

2.The name of the Prophet Ibrahim’s son who helped him build the Ka‘bah is

Isma‘il (peace be upon them both) [page 5].

3.‘The One’ is a reference to Allah, the One God, All-Merciful and Almighty [page 5].

4.Ihram can be put on anywhere before reaching the point of meeqat: at home,

at the airport or on the aeroplane [page 8].

5.The full text of the ‘Talbiyah’ is provided on the accompanying poster [page 8].

      6.Tawaf is customarily completed with a du‘a [page 17].

7.During Sa‘i, the second part of ‘Umrah, there are green lights which mark the area that Sayyidah

Hajar ran between while seeking water for her son, Isma‘il (peace be upon him). Male pilgrims run

between these two green lights, while ladies walk quickly [page 21].

8.According to various schools of thought, it is also permissible for men to cut or trim some of their hair

      Конец ознакомительного фрагмента.
