      The Homework Sanity System

The Homework Sanity System is a companion book from the creators of Homework Sanity for parents with children in grades K through 12. This is a basic overview of the core items contained in the Homework Sanity workshops, for parents who are looking to bring sanity into their homes during September through June, when homework seems to invade their home like termites take to wood.

Excessive homework eats away at our quality of life because it puts an unregulated time demand not only on the child, but also on the parent. This system gives parents a well balanced approach that encourages accountability and responsibility as core values for children when approaching their homework.

Children should “do their own work”—and even more importantly, at their own pace—in order to allow them to develop into a productive person who thinks just a bit before taking actions. There’s a race for all schools to get the highest grades possible. A belief that one day all schools could be filled with straight-A students is, well … delusional.

The bell curve exists for a reason. People are not the same. Sometimes we will be on the low end of a bell curve, and other times on the high end. However, in most of what life brings us, we will be in the middle. In actuality, this is the proper place to be, because it means we are in balance.

We don’t want to be too far ahead of those around us, which can be annoying to others and encourage them to work as a group to pull us down. We don’t want to be too far behind, where others may become resentful and feel we’re dragging them down, and the only solution is to push us away.

We want to be simply right where we should be-–a part of the world, versus apart from others and living in our own parallel universe. The greatest gift is being unique while at the same time being part of a productive group dynamic. This allows us to work alone when we need to and with others when we need to.
