Ponies are part of the horse
family, but they have shorter legs.
Sometimes they have feathery
hair on the backs of their legs.
Ponies and horses are measured
in hands. A hand is four inches.
An adult pony is less than 14.2
hands high, or 58 inches tall.
Although they are small, ponies
are very strong. People use ponies
for riding and for pulling carts.
Their sturdy bodies can pull
a lot of weight.
Ponies have lived in the wild for
many thousands of years.
Today, some wild ponies live in
protected areas.
Very small horse breeds, like the
Falabella, are even smaller than
some ponies.
American wild
ponies eat the
salty plants that
grow by the
ocean. These
ponies spend
most of their
time on a
small island
in the Eastern
United States.
Mountain and moor ponies are
used to being outside. Their thick
coats protect them from the cold.
