      Callum Kindly

       and the Very Weird Child

      Sarah Naish and Rosie Jefferies

      Illustrated by Megan Evans

      Introduction

      Meet Callum Kindly

      and Katie Careful

Callum Kindly lives with his mum. He has always had her all to himself…until now! Callum is a real little boy who struggled to keep feeling kind when a very weird child came to stay. Katie Careful is also a real little girl who could not help feeling angry, sad or jealous, and doing things that upset Callum.

Katie is the sibling of William Wobbly, Rosie Rudey, Sophie Spikey and Charley Chatty. She has come to stay with Callum before joining her brother and sisters in their new home.

In this story Callum Kindly has had enough of sharing his mum with another child. Not only is Katie always getting in the way, but now she has spoilt his birthday and taken his car! Luckily, Callum’s mum knows how to help Callum feel safe and help him to find his kind feelings again.

Written by Katie’s mum and her sister, this story will help everyone understand others more and feel a bit better.

Callum Kindly was feeling a bit grumpy.

Normally he was a kind and caring boy, but

today he wasn’t feeling very kind. At ALL.

Callum lived with his mum, Theresa. Just Callum and Mum, exactly the way he liked it. But now things had changed and Callum didn’t like the change. Not one bit.

A few weeks ago, Theresa had spoken to Callum and asked how he felt about maybe having another child living with them in their house. She had explained that the child might need some extra attention. Callum had thought it sounded cool.

It didn’t feel cool anymore though.

Katie Careful had come to stay a few days ago. Katie was a Very weird child. She followed Theresa around ALL the time.

p6

Every time Callum tried to speak to his mum, or have snuggle time, Katie managed to get in the way.

Callum didn’t think he liked having other children living with him anymore and he didn’t like this very weird child.

p7

Yesterday it was Callum’s birthday. His mum

had given him a new remote-controlled car.

       Callum was so happy!

He had wanted the car for a long time.

Katie was very cross on Callum’s birthday.

She had sulked and cried. She had said that no one loved her because she couldn’t have a birthday too.

p8

      Callum didn’t want Katie to

       share his mum, but he

didn’t want her to be sad

       either. He wondered what

it would feel like to have

       no birthdays. Callum had

       felt mixed up about feeling

       happy on his birthday, when

Katie was so sad and cross.

Today Callum thought he might share his new car with Katie to cheer her up. He went to his room to fetch it ...but his car was GONE.

p9

Then he saw that Katie was sitting on his bed, holding the remote control and smiling away happily.

Callum was very angry with Katie and shouted at her, “Where is my car?! I hate you!”

      Katie kept smiling happily.

p10

Suddenly Theresa came into the room.

Straight away Katie stopped smiling and started making crying sounds with her big, crying mouth.

Callum thought it was a bit strange as there were not any tears.
