      Charley Chatty

      and the Disappearing Pennies

      Sarah Naish and Rosie Jefferies

      Illustrated by Megan Evans

      Introduction

      Meet Charley Chatty

      and her family

Charley Chatty lives with her brother, William Wobbly, and sisters, Rosie Rudey, Katie Careful and Sophie Spikey. The children did not have an easy start in life and now live with their new mum and dad. All the stories are true stories. The children are real children who had difficult times, and were left feeling as if they could not trust grown-ups to sort anything out, or look after them properly. Sometimes the children were sad, sometimes very angry. Often they did things which upset other people, but they did not understand why.

In this story, Charley has spotted some pennies lying around. She likes the shiny pennies and knows they will buy her nice things. The problem is, they do not belong to her and now they are in her piggy bank! Charley gets all hot and bothered when Dad starts looking for the lost pennies. Luckily, Charley’s new dad is good at working out what might have happened and helps Charley to put it all right again.

Written by Charley’s mum and big sister Rosie (who also liked to collect shiny things and is a grown-up now), this story will help everyone feel a bit better.

Charley Chatty was a very chatty, busy little girl. She liked to know everything that was going on and make sure everyone knew she was there. Her sisters, Rosie Rudey, Sophie Spikey and Katie Careful, found this very annoying. Her brother, William Wobbly, said Charley made his head wobble.

p5

Charley lived with her brother and sisters and their new mum and dad. It was a very busy house with lots of noise and rushing about.

Charley had very good slidey eyes and noticed whenever people left important things lying around. This meant she was very clever at finding lost things.

p6

“Where are my shoes?” said William.

      “Under the table,” answered Charley.

“I can’t find my PE kit!” Sophie complained.

“It’s on your bed,” said Charley, helpfully.

p7

Charley also noticed other things lying around.

Sometimes they were nice shiny things, and sometimes they just looked a bit interesting.

p8

Sometimes Charley would put the interesting things in her pocket to make sure her brother and sisters didn’t get them first. Charley thought that Sophie Spikey often had a lot more ‘nice things’ than she had, so Charley made sure she shared Sophie’s things with herself more often.

Then, later she would look at them carefully in her room. This gave her a nice warm feeling in her tummy.

p9

Today Sophie was due to go on a school trip so Dad had left the money on the side for Sophie to take to school. Charley saw the money sitting there, with the pennies shining so brightly.

p10

Before she had too much time to think, all the money was in Charley’s pocket. Charley could feel them all hard and cool with her hand. They felt very nice.

p11

Charley felt a big whooshy feeling inside that made her legs walk very quickly to her bedroom. When she got there, she looked for a safe place to put the shiny pennies and noticed that her piggy bank looked a bit sad and empty.
