      Katie Careful

      and the Very Sad Smile

      Sarah Naish and Rosie Jefferies

      Illustrated by Megan Evans

      Introduction

      Meet Katie Careful

      and her family

Katie Careful is a real little girl who has just joined her siblings at their new mum and dad’s home. It’s all a bit scary and worrying but Katie smiles and smiles.

Katie is the sibling of William Wobbly, Rosie Rudey, Sophie Spikey and Charley Chatty. Before she moved to her new mum and dad’s she stayed with Callum Kindly for a short while.

In this story Katie cannot help smiling every time she feels wobbly or sad. She also follows Mum around a lot to make sure she knows exactly what is going on. Then she asks someone else to be her mum! Katie doesn’t know what will happen next, but luckily her new mum is nearby to help her sort out all the muddles and to help Katie start to feel safe.

Written by Katie’s mum and her sister, this story will help everyone to feel a bit better.

Katie Careful always had a very big smile. She smiled and smiled at everyone and everything.

When she was happy she smiled.

When she was worried she smiled.

When she was sad she smiled.

When she was angry she smiled with all her might!

p5

Katie was pleased that she had come to live with her brother and sisters at their new mum and dad’s house. She had forgotten how noisy Charley Chatty could be and how bossy Rosie Rudey was though!

p6

Katie concentrated very hard on always smiling at her new mum and dad. She smiled hard because she didn’t want them to send her away. She wanted to stay with her brother and sisters.

p7

Katie used her baby voice when she spoke to Mum and Dad to make sure they liked her. Rosie told her to stop talking in a stupid way. Katie smiled a bit harder.

p8

When Katie couldn’t see Mum, she felt wobbly inside so she quickly followed her to check up on her.

She followed her to the kitchen.

She followed her to the lounge.

She followed her to the bedroom.

She even followed her to the toilet!

When Mum was in the toilet, Katie couldn’t see her so she banged on the door to remind Mum she was there.

p9

Sometimes she sang the “I love you” song at the top of her voice when she couldn’t see Mum. Mum looked at the sky a lot when Katie followed her about. Katie wondered what Mum was looking at, so she followed her more to check.

p10

When Mum sat down, Katie made sure she sat very close to her. Sometimes this made the other children very cross and there was a fight about who could sit closest to Mum.

      Katie always won.

p11

Mum said it was difficult to get up when Katie was holding on to her arm or leg so tightly. Then Mum would make a funny game where she would drag her leg along with Katie still clinging on to it.

p12

One day, Mum looked at the calendar on the wall and said it was supermarket shopping day. Katie smiled hard, even though she felt a bit wobbly about all that noise and space.
