THE BOOK OF INDIAN BEAUTY
(Frontispiece). She scented her cheeks by passing over them leaves soaked in musk; she took camphor and with it set the sign of beauty upon her forehead, near the line of the curling hair; her body shone with the gilded excellence of saffron; she sprinkled on her clothes the attar of roses. When her preparations were over, she took counsel with her glass, it told her that her beauty had never before so charmingly repaid embellishment. (Kshemendra, 8th century)
1 (Frontispiece). Lady with her mirror. Kangra, late 18th century.
