After blasting and sanding, a crack is revealed that goes all the way through. I could have replaced this pan, but I didn’t want to take another vintage oil pan out of circulation.
Final sanding after metal work, epoxy primer, and high-build primer. This cover is going to look good.
CHAPTER 5
ENGINE TEARDOWN
In this chapter, I will explain how to tear down the engine without doing any inadvertent damage. Certain things need to happen in order for you to be successful. For example, the timing cover does not come off when you remove all of the outside screws. That would have been too easy! There are two more screws inside the engine only accessible if you drop the oil pan. These little nuances can have you scratching your head without guidance. The shop manual is helpful, but there is nothing like learning from the experiences of others.
These balancers usually come right off, which is a concern when you think about it. The best idea is to have the machine shop drill a 7/16 x 20 x 1½-inch hole in the crank for a bolt to hold the balancer in place. You don’t want the balancer falling off at speed; believe me.
