With the ever increasing trade and the Dutch sovereignty over Java in the 16th century, Javanese batiks were introduced to Holland and subsequently all of Europe. It became a challenging new subject for artists and craftsmen, and they successfully simplified the process. They had a few things in their favor, such as the invention of the aniline dyes and the development of dry cleaning, along with various gadgets and utensils which most of the Javanese could not afford. At the beginning of this century the Dutchmen Lebeau and Pieter Mijer produced some truly beautiful hangings. They worked with the brush and the tjanting (a cup with spout, holding the melted wax) and executed the most intricate designs with amazing skill and accuracy.
