      introduction

      I love origami. I can spend hours and hours doing it. But what to do with all the things that I’ve folded? My shelves are full. My desk is covered. I could fill up boxes and put them in the attic, but where’s the fun in that? I want to display them!

      Where I live, in Japan, many people turn their origami into collages. Every kindergarten and every daycare center covers its walls with posters made from origami. The pictures are changed every month, and the children often make them. My own kids do it at home too, and they have taken over one whole wall for their own gallery. It keeps changing, so we never get tired of it.

      Though it’s possible to make more detailed and realistic pictures by painting them, or cutting and pasting, not everyone has the skill or desire to do that. But everyone can fold, and it’s the folding that makes the shapes that make the picture. Everyone’s origami looks great when it’s put in a collage.

      So here are a bunch of projects for you to fold and work into your very own collages. Some are traditional; more are my original designs. They all look great on their own, and they look even better in their sets, but they will look best when you add your own touches. What kind of picture they become is up to you. Fold them and it’s craft. Move them around and paste them down, and it’s art—your art!
