The second penguin’s name was Walter. Guess how I can change the large V into a W for Walter. That’s right, we simply fold the bottom of the large V up part way to form the letter W.5 (This is an example of a RAT fold. RAT means Right About There!) You don’t need to measure it, just aim for a point about halfway to an imaginary line connecting the tops of the V. Great.

The third penguin in our story is named Michael. (Do you know anybody named Michael? I do!) It is easy to make an M by simply turning our W upside down.6

One day, Viola and Walter noticed that Michael was missing! It turned out that Michael had gone on vacation. Michael had traveled to the other side of The Great White Diamond, out of sight from Viola and Walter. Michael went to a small iceberg situated in the shadow, on the other side of the Great White Diamond. He had heard that the minnows were particularly delicious at this small iceberg, named Miniberg.7 & 8

Michael was thoughtful. He sent Viola and Walter a picture postcard of his wonderful vacation spot. Here is his postcard. This scene is often called “Miniberg at Midnight”, because the shadow of the large iceberg is so dark, it always looks like midnight.

Viola and Walter loved the postcard of Miniberg at Midnight, and folded it in half, just like this, to keep it in a drawer with their other postcards. They would take it out and look at it the next time they were to plan a vacation.

When Michael returned, he was very tired from his trip and promptly went to sleep, with his beak tucked down close to his front feathers.9

After his long rest, he woke up and began to look for food. (Pull outward on his beak, and adjust the angle by pinching his head behind his ears. My Aunt Viola used to pinch my ears too!)10

In this episode of the amazing adventures of Lefty and Righty I will tell how our two good friends first met last winter. They both belonged to the Mountain Club that organized outdoor adventures, such as climbing, hiking, snowboarding, and even sailboat racing. Lefty and Righty lived on opposite sides of this snow-covered mountain.2 Let’s have Lefty climb to the top. Now we see Righty hiking up to the top. This is where they first met, and introduced themselves to one another.3

As they sat down for lunch, the mountain began to shake! “Let’s get out of here!” They each jumped on their snowboards, and Lefty swooshed down the left side, and Righty swooshed down the right side of the mountain.

It was a good thing that they left as soon as they did. They looked up to see the top of the mountain split open, and boiling mud flowed down to the base of the mountain, melting the snow in its path.4 & 5

The next day, after the mud had cooled off, Lefty and Righty decided to see what the mountaintop looked like. Lefty went to the top, hiking along the slippery mud, then Righty joined him, hiking up along the slippery mud.5 & 6

When they got to the top, they saw mud all over their clothes and boots, so they searched for a place to get clean. Over on the other side of the mountain, was White Diamond Lake, sparkling and clean.7

They took a dip, jumping into the crystal clear waters of White Diamond Lake.

As they swam across, that colorful mud rinsed right off, and it settled on the bottom of White Diamond Lake.7 & 8

As they began to swim back across White Diamond Lake, they only got halfway,9 when a friend from the club sailed his boat up beside them, and offered them a ride.

Since the waters were cold, they immediately accepted, and enjoyed a pleasant sailboat ride. Other club members were there, and they all enjoyed a party, with snacks and sailboat races.

Stand your boats on a smooth tabletop. Gently blow wind across the sails and have a sailboat race! Don’t blow too hard, or you may capsize, and lose the race!10
