“I think I can handle it.”

      He smiled.

This guy was really starting to bore me and I decided it was time to speed him on his way.

“I guess I will see you around,” I said making it clear that I wanted him gone.

“See ya,” he said brightly as he turned and walked away.

After Jason was gone I hurried out of bed to take a shower. I wasn’t in the mood to receive any more visitors. I took my time in the shower and even longer getting dressed. I wasn’t in a hurry to attend my first class; it wasn’t like I’d be learning anything new. I also decided to remove my contacts. I saw little point in still wearing them.

After an hour I was finally dressed. Pocketing my schedule I was about to leave my room when I suddenly realized my pocket wasn’t empty—something sizable was already in it.

I pulled out the object and saw that it was a cell phone. Stickered to its surface was a tag with my name on it.

      I frowned.

Who’d placed this thing in my pocket? And how’d they known what uniform I’d be wearing today? Or was it coincidence that I just happened to put on the uniform that had a cell phone for me in its pocket?

Having no clues to aid me with this mystery I tossed the phone on my bed and walked out of my room.

Once I locked my door, I strode down the hall. But I had barely walked for thirty seconds when I heard someone calling my name.

      “Amadeus! Amadeus!”

I was relieved that it was the voice of a girl. A girl I could deal with. But a boring, chipper, school president would definitely be a problem.

I turned round slowly and saw a stunning auburn-haired girl striding toward me. Though she was shorter than me I could tell she was older—probably a senior. I noted also that the girl’s uniforms were the same as the boy’s—except that the girls wore black skirts. When she was a few feet away she stopped and looked at me.

“Are you Amadeus Angel?” she asked in a pleasant voice.

      “I am. Who’re you?”

I kept my voice light and casual.

      “Camilla Stone.”

“Stone?” I asked scrutinizing her face, “Any relation to Professor Stone?”

      “He’s my dad.”

      “Ah.”

      “Did you get lost?”

      I wish.

“Something like that,” I gave her a crooked smile, “Were you sent to come fetch me?”

“Something like that,” she replied with a crooked smile of her own.

I saw her eyes rove over my appearance, clearly liking what she was seeing.

I plucked my schedule from my pocket and handed it to her.

“Think you can show me where these classes are?”

Instead of taking the schedule from me, she simply took a step closer and peered at it.

“You’re in the same classes as I am.”

“I guess I won’t be needing this then,” I said crumpling the schedule and shoving it back into my pocket.

She giggled. It wasn’t as alluring as Victoria’s, but it was still nice.

“So which way?” I asked looking up and down the hall.

“That way,” she nodded in the direction she had come.

I got the feeling she wasn’t in any hurry and I wondered why that was.

Well, I wasn’t about to stand here all day.

I started walking in the direction she’d indicated. She followed reluctantly. It struck me as odd that there weren’t any other students around.

“Just how late am I?” I asked

“Pretty late,” she said as she caught up to me.

“How much time ’til the next period?”

She glanced at her watch. “About half an hour.”

      Damn.

      “So you’re what—a senior?”

“Yeah. I heard you’re a senior now too,” she said sounding impressed

      “Yeah.”

      Man this is boring.

“So why don’t you want to go back to class?”

      “Is it that obvious?”

      “Pretty much.”

      “It’s just my boyfriend.”

      So she had a boyfriend.

“I’m trying to think of the best way to break up with him.”

A crooked smile passed over my face.

I knew where this was going.

On the rare occasions my false parents let me outside, I discovered I had a strange power over girls I found attractive. For some reason, whether they were taken or single, they all felt the need to come on to me. It was hard to say just how many hearts I’d broken with this little power of mine, but I was sure it was a lot.

“So who’s your boyfriend?” I asked curiously.

I wasn’t sure why I asked her this. I mean it wasn’t like I knew the guy. But I couldn’t help but wonder the name of boy whose heart I’d break.

      “You met him this morning.”

      I stared at her.

“Your boyfriend is Jason Cole?” I asked with a touch of concern.

“Ex-boyfriend,” she replied emphatically, “I’ve found someone better.”

      I shifted uneasily.

Though I by no means liked the guy, I didn’t think Jason deserved what Camilla was about to do him. Unfortunately, I could no more control this mysterious power than I could control my own heartbeat. So Jason Cole would just have to get used to being single again.

      Camilla slowed her pace.

“Is that the class?” I asked, nodding to the door on her left.

“Yep,” she said smilingly as she placed her hand on the
