Public opinion and outcry pressured the Sheriff’s Department to do what it could to conclude and settle the allegations. By the second day, the Sheriff’s Internal Investigations Unit had already started the process of interviewing the Deputies involved in the chase. As part of their investigation they intended to reach out to the Immigration and Naturalization Service for help in identifying the driver who had escaped. The Internal Investigations Unit felt it was necessary to locate the driver of the pickup as part of the internal investigation. I think the feeling was that the driver had caused so much danger to the Deputies and the public that day that they just had to prosecute him. They may have felt this way particularly if two Deputies faced the loss of their employment and possible prison time.
