I am writing this book because in September, 2007 my mother suffered a stroke while living alone. Consequently she came to live with my husband and me. She lived with us for three years. I am sharing my experience and knowledge with you to help you in your journey. This is not a sugar-coated storybook. You have embarked on a serious undertaking which will change your life forever.
Chapter 1
What do I do First?
Assuming your parent is able to converse and to articulate her wishes, you need to spend one-on-one time together, don’t drag it out, maybe a week at most, talking about the future. The two of you have a lot of legal and health concerns that need to be taken care of immediately. This is a time to listen and to let your parent talk. This is a time to assure your parent that you are here for her. Realize that both of you are searching for the right path. Mom is now forced to give up her independence and become dependent on you; she is somewhat anxious. She is still your parent. Her role as a parent has been twisted, but she still needs to be able to maintain her dignity. Enroll her as an ally to begin this transition so she feels she has a voice and is part of the decision process. Always keep her informed and explain why this or that needs to be done.
This is a good time to begin your list of what needs to be done: a visit to the doctor, a meeting with her attorney to make sure she has all of documents in order. It is also a time for the bonding and the trust between the two of you to deepen and gain strength as you plan together what needs to be done. As the years move forward you will need this strength from each other.
Your parent needs to hear “I love you” often. Show your parent your love by tucking him/her in every night with a hug and a kiss
