Assessment didn’t work? Keep a journal and write in it. Remember, business school isn’t just about learning how to create an Income Statement. You’re paying good money to take bigger steps with your career, your salary, and your life. Take the time to get it right after business school and journal. You’ll be amazed at what you’ll learn about your true desires – and what you are really willing to work hard to get.

What would be your ideal work environment today?
What magazine would you most like to be featured in for your tremendous accomplishments in 10 years?
What am I most excited about in my life right now?
Whom do you envy and what is it about them that you envy?
Step 3:
Quit analyzing and thinking about what you’d like to do and take some action instead. If you think you might enjoy finance or marketing, give yourself an opportunity to experiment in the role. Considering a career in marketing? Offer to do a marketing strategy assessment for a local nonprofit. Thinking about human resources management? Design and deliver a series of training programs to a local charity. (Yes – this is more time consuming, but I remind you…this is your life we’re talking about!)
The point here is to take action that allows you to temporarily live in the role you’d like to assume. Don’t get caught in the trap of only reading about your profession or conducting lots of informational interviews as your main sources of information. These are great ways to network and learn more about opportunities, but, ultimately, they won’t help you truly see what it feels like to play the role you’d like after graduation because they’re simply too passive.
