for this pandemic; and hopefully, we will be able to respond more quickly to, or even prevent, the next one.
We anticipate that the most challenging work of the coming years will be in finding ways to use the QSEN competencies to recognize and deal with the inequities within health care. What does person and family‐centered care look like when someone is homeless? How do we develop comprehensive databases that fully include all residents of a community, not just those accessing health care? Who needs to be on the team when we decide where and when immunization clinics will be scheduled? What are specific threats to safety for lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender and queer (LBGTQ) teens, and how do we mitigate those? How do we know? One significant issue to be addressed is how we educate the public about health care quality and safety.
This third edition begins to explore some of these issues. Undoubtedly, numerous other issues will emerge. Summoning the words of Cronenwett et al. (2007) in that first article: “At the core of nursing lies incredible historical will to ensure quality and safety for patients.” Progress has been made; much remains to be done. Whatever challenges emerge, we will tackle them as we have done before.
