      The first time I encountered a person diagnosed with schizophrenia in a psychiatric hospital, I was 16 years old. My mother took me to visit Orlean, her friends’ daughter, who was only three years older than I was. A bright, beautiful, outgoing young woman, Orlean, so I was told, had a “mental breakdown” following a breakup with her high school sweetheart.
