Children of the New Consciousness
Susan Gale, the program administrator at a day care center, was observing a three-year-old boy, James, who had never spoken a word and who had been labeled autistic. Every day his favorite activity was to build walls and throw things at them. He also tried to throw toys out of the window and at other children. Frequently he would run up to another child, do something inappropriate and then laugh.
However, when Susan looked into his eyes, she saw not mental illness or disconnection from the world, but a lively intelligence.
