      Foreword

Good health and great food ‐ this is something everybody wants. But the quest for good health is unfortunately all too commonly taken over by dieting; a predominantly commercial enterprise, which promises much, but rarely delivers. The enjoyment of good food then becomes a distant memory for many people. Sally Johnston’s publications are as refreshing as they are original, and they rejoice in their ability to provide good food to those who are planning a long‐term commitment to their own health. These books, replete with beautiful color photography and succinct recipes are a façade for the degree of detail and wealth of research that has gone into making the dishes a foundation for healthy eating. I can truly say that these volumes are a labour of love for Sally and this more than anything, shines through. Sally Johnston is impeccably credentialed and widely experienced, and I have complete trust in the advice she can deliver. Enjoy this book, enjoy your health and bon appétit!

      Contributor: Sharon Dredge

Passionate Cook with a Gastric Band

Sharon completed a certificate in Food and Community Services in 1997, qualifying her as a ‘diet cook’–the link between a cook and a dietitian. This provided her with knowledge of food, nutrition, cooking, food preparation and menu planning for people with a range of dietary requirements.

Sharon first met Sally as a client. Having battled with her weight since she was a child and now a mother of four not wanting her life cut short, Sharon made the decision to undergo bariatric surgery. At her consultation with Sally her knowledge of food, nutrition and recipe modification became apparent. Sharon was then consulted on improving the recipes that Sally had been developing; increasing the fibre and protein content, texture modification, enhancing flavours and ensuring the methods were clear and easy to follow.

Sharon was keen to be involved, putting her love of food, nutrition and recipe modification to work. The bonus for Sharon was that she tested the recipes, which helped her overcome her fear of being ‘stuck’ on a fluid diet for two weeks following her own surgery. Her fears were quickly resolved, becoming excited about the ‘fluid diet’, knowing how delicious the recipes are.

Sharon’s favourite recipe? She really couldn’t narrow it down to one.

      Welcome to the Journey

This ebook series evolved from years of patients asking if there were recipe books available for people following bariatric surgery, or if I had recipes to recommend. When I took the plunge and began writing, the client support was overwhelming.

However, anybody can write a recipe book. There are thousands on the market, even some aimed at those who have had weight loss surgery. So how is this series different? This series combines appetizing, healthy and simple recipes, the knowledge of a dietitian and many of the lessons learned from working with bariatric clients over the years. Rigorous nutrition analysis has been undertaken in the development
