fresh ginger to taste
Wash all ingredients thoroughly. Peel the lemon and remove the apple seeds. Pull the cilantro leaves from their stems to prevent discoloration of the final product. Process the leafy green ingredients first, fruit, spices and vegetables. Use the celery and cucumber to push any extra material into your juicer completely. Process the juice until the result is opaque, bright green, and free of lumps.
Neutral Green Juice
This variation on the basic green juice recipe provides a fairly neutral taste with a hint of mild sweetness. It's perfect for anyone who doesn't like strong or savory juices, as well as juice dieters who want a few more carbohydrates in their green beverages. Because the flavor of apples can vary significantly between varieties, pick one that provides the balance of sweetness and tartness that you prefer. Fuji, Golden Delicious and McIntosh are great places to start.
Ingredients
3 cups Romaine lettuce
2 cups kale
2 cups parsley
3 stalks celery
1 large cucumber
1 large sweet apple
Rinse all ingredients thoroughly to remove chemical residues and dirt. Pull the parsley leaves off of their stems and remove the seeds from the apple. Cut the stem end off of the cucumber. Add the leafy vegetables to your juicer or blender slowly, allowing them to process completely, followed by the apple, cucumber and celery stalks. Drink this juice as a mild start to your day or a calming before-bed treat.
Grapefruit Greens
This fruit and vegetable combo produces a healthy green juice with a tart citrus kick. Add a flavorful apple to the mix to provide some extra carbohydrates and a rounded sweetness that balances the sour and bitter citrus elements. This recipe produces a complex juice that will appeal to anyone who doesn't like their beverages to be simply sweet.
Ingredients
1 large bunch kale
4 stalks celery
1 large cucumber
1 white grapefruit
1 Persian lime or 2 Key limes
1 sweet apple, such as McIntosh, Gala or Honeycrisp
Remove all brown spots, insect damage and dirt or chemical residues from the ingredients. Cut the stem end off of the cucumber, remove the apple seeds and peel the citrus ingredients. Feed the kale leaves into the juicer one at a time, followed by the celery and cucumber. Add the fruit to the mixture slowly to produce a light green juice with a tart flavor.
Nopal Cactus Juice
Nopal cactus paddles, better known as prickly pear, are known for their ability to help balance blood sugar levels. These interesting vegetables also contain plenty of fiber to help keep your body healthy. To reduce the labor required to make this thick, smoothie-like beverage, choose cactus paddles that have already been de-spined. Use a blender or a juicer equipped with a large screen to preserve the thick, health-promoting pulp that this juice produces.
Ingredients
1 cups spinach leaves
1 medium cactus paddle
1 large tangerine
1 cup strawberries
Wash all ingredients and remove the spines from the cactus with pliers if necessary. Hull the strawberries, discarding the leaves, then peel the tangerine and remove any seeds. Blend or juice the spinach and cactus, adding water if necessary to keep the motor from laboring. Add the fruit, processing until there are no visible chunks and the mixture is smooth and thick.
Sweet Broccoli Juice
Tangerines add a little sweetness to this green juice, which provides plenty of vitamins C and K, along with phosphorus, B vitamins, manganese and magnesium. If you don't have access to tangerines, consider substituting a small orange or a Meyer lemon. The flavor will be slightly different, but the juice will still be delicious.
1 small head broccoli
4 stalks celery
2 tangerines
shredded ginger to taste
Peel the tangerines and remove any seeds. Wash the broccoli and celery, then process all ingredients until a smooth, thick juice is produced. Add water if desired and garnish with fresh ginger.
Pineapple Spinach Juice
Pineapple and spinach might seem like a strange combination, but they actually go together very well. This recipe provides calcium, iron and plenty of vitamins A and C. It can easily be made in a blender or a juicer, but it's best to use a large screen to capture all that delicious pineapple pulp.
Ingredients
1 cup fresh spinach
1 cup fresh pineapple
1 bunch parsley
Wash all ingredients and cut the pineapple into large pieces, trimming off the rind and core. Remove the parsley leaves from their stems to prevent discoloration of the juice. Put all ingredients into a blender or juicer, adding water to thin the mixture if necessary.
Spinach Fennel Drink
Fennel provides an exciting licorice taste to this sweet green juice. It's like having licorice candy in a healthy, refreshing drink. Like some other green juices, this one can look a little murky when it's finished, but the refreshing taste and smell make up for the look.
Ingredients
3 cups fresh spinach
2 large carrots
1 whole stalk fennel, bulb and leaves included
1 large tart apple
Remove the seeds from the apple and the stem ends from the carrots. Wash all the ingredients thoroughly. Cut the fennel into pieces that your blender or juicer can handle, then process the spinach, fennel and apple together. Use the carrots to push any remaining material through the juicer. Add a little extra water if the result is too thick for your preferences.
Green Lemonade
Lemonade is a lasting summer favorite, but conventional recipes include a lot of sugar and relatively little nutrition. This green lemonade recipe provides you with the powerful benefits of leafy green vegetables, plus the bright tang of lemon. A sweet apple and a little extra water help keep this tasty green beverage from being too sour.
1 cup kale
1 cup fresh spinach
