“I can’t tell you, not when you’re going to talk to the police tomorrow.”
“I told you; I’m not going to lie.”
“No, and I don’t want you to, but I might be able to clear this up.”
She wavers.
“Katie, if you close for me tonight, I promise, I will take all of your closing shifts for the next month and you and Mr. McDermitt can have all the dirty sex time you want.”
Business slows to a crawl. Katie accepted my offer and I’m able to cash out a little before eleven. After checking out and running my report, I give my credit card tips to Katie because, hopefully, she really is saving my ass.
We wish each other a perfunctory “good night” and I hurriedly walk out the door.
Instead of going straight to the Parker house, I park down the street from The Gryphon, amongst the Lyft and Uber drivers, and watch the door, praying that my hunch is right.
About an hour later, my patience is finally rewarded.
There.
A green Hyundai parks in The Gryphon parking lot. Out jumps Genevieve Winters. She hurries to the door since the bar is about to close and goes inside.
I twist the key in the ignition.
She must have followed Mr. Parker, waited for a while, decided that he had just packed it in for the evening, and come back to the bar to harass me a little more.
Too bad. I hope Katie tells her that I left an hour ago.
I pull a u-turn and drive off towards the cliffs.
