Late one afternoon Manuel Gonsalves was driving his brand new Chevrolet home to Ilikai. It was such a beautiful car! It was fire-engine red with chrome bumpers, chrome strips, and chrome door handles. The upholstery was ivory-colored plastic, and the wheels had lovely white-wall tires. Manuel drove slowly because the road to Ilikai was full of bumps and had so many ruts and holes. He was afraid he might break the springs in his car if he were not very careful, and this car had cost him his life's savings.
