The artistic diversity of video games is staggering, as befits any medium with countless passionate creators. The artistry of Journey, however, is particularly wonderful. You play as a cloaked figure wandering in the desert, through the ruins and remnants of a long lost civilization, with your eyes on a distant mountaintop. The warm earth tones of your robe both contrast and blend with the pale sparkling sands of the desert. Hues and shades change as you press onward, but it seems that you could pause the game at any moment and be looking a beautiful image.
Journey’s artistry is not merely visual. As you trudge up sand dunes and glide down them, there is beauty in your movement. Your flowing robe and fluttering scarf trace a graceful silhouette, so don’t be surprised to find yourself frolicking about just because it feels so good. It’s a rare game that can make merely moving around a joyful experience, but Journey is just such a game.
There is beauty, too, in Journey’s solitude and companionship. For much of the game, you travel alone, a solitary figure amidst ageless mysteries. But suddenly, you are not alone. An anonymous player has joined you, and though you can only communicate through chimes, you are drawn together by your shared endeavor. How your adventure together takes shape is yet another mystery, one you can only solve by playing through to the end. Journey is a resonant and resplendent adventure, not to be missed.
Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption is the greatest Western that the video game industry has ever produced. That alone should get it on your bucket list, but if you need a little more convincing or just want to know what you have to look forward to, read on.
You play as John Marston, an outlaw-gone-clean forced to get dirty again when government agents kidnap his family and demand that he hunt down his former partners-in-crime. Marston’s long and winding quest is full of eccentric allies and nasty enemies who lend the narrative much of its juicy Western flavor.
Like many a stoic gunslinger before him, Marston didn’t get to be the man he is by talking. The gunfights you get into are varied and plentiful; from racing across the chaparral on horseback to taking cover behind the bar in a saloon to leaping from car to car on the back of a moving train. Red Dead Redemption is packed with exciting moments that bring the outlaw fantasy to life, but thankfully, it’s not all gunplay. There’s plenty of time to ride across the open range and see what adventures await.
You might go on the hunt for valuable plants or animal pelts; just be sure a cougar doesn’t make you its prey. You might find a stranger desperate for help; just be sure that her overturned cart isn’t hiding an ambush. Red Dead Redemption’s world is a dangerous one, but it’s also beautiful. When you see the sun setting over a broad bend in the river with the dusty hills rolling off into the distance, you can’t help but stop and stare a while. With the Wild West stretching out in front of you and the fantastic soundtrack setting the mood, this game is a living room cowboy’s dream come true.

Marston’s lasso is one of the stars of the show, whether you’re roping and taming a wild horse, running down a man with a bounty on his head, or dragging an ornery varmint behind your horse as you trot through a cactus patch.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Of all the high-flying action movie heroes that video games have produced, Nathan Drake is the best. The star of the Uncharted series is handsome, charming, witty, and fueled by just the right cocktail of decency and rakishness. But he wouldn’t be such an appealing character if he didn’t have such an excellent supporting cast, and Sully, Elena, and Chloe aren’t simply one-dimensional foils. They burst with life onto the screen, excellently acted and wonderfully animated, enriching every scene they are in and making the story of Uncharted 2 a pleasure to unravel.
