are all transfixed at the Shards. Even people that were responding through the veil of light are simply unresponsive.
Sammy ordered all units to fall back to safety, as something obviously was happening.
Bubbles is holding me tightly and is shaking; we both fear the worst is coming.
Our media screens have been showing a similar pattern happening around the world, they are definitely intelligent as they have to be in communication to keep this level of coordination. As we were watching, some screens are flickering, and then a couple of screens go blank to be replaced by other cameras, but located at more distant locations.
Then suddenly the Shards’ beams just turned off, nothing changes. The humming is still there and is about as loud as an idling family sized car. The people seem to be trapped there, they do not move.
Without any warning, some of the soldiers in the defensive units also appeared to be like the others, a couple more joined the silent ranks attempting to reach their mates. From what we have seen there was no set pattern, as the effects have spread out in random ways. Just in the general area, its estimated around eight hundred thousand people, man, woman and children, are just trapped, just at Wellington alone.
Sammy has heard that headquarters has ceased responding to reports and can’t be reached with secure radios, landlines or cell phones. Reports from the coverage of Christchurch state that from a distance, there is no visible movement, and that they have lost contact with their crews that were covering this event.
We lost power for a period of time, our lights and screens dimmed and then return to normal. Outside it’s getting darker as dusk turns to night. There is no power outside, anywhere that we can see, it’s off.
Sammy has ordered all forces to get themselves and as many of the city’s residents out of the city and towards the mountains.
Looking from our coverage of the city, this will be a tall order as the areas that are affected are in a random pattern. A lot of people are surrounded. In other places, we see no one for some distance and we already know how they can detect the field, by blind dumb luck, simply walking into the area.

Sammy has held an open briefing of what he’s aware of, the following is as best as I can remember as I was stunned.
As of this moment I’ve assumed command of the forces of New Zealand, however many there are left to effectively command. We believe that we have lost over 80% of our active forces and probably 70% of our reserves. I say lost because nothing seems to be able to get through to our men trapped by the light beams of the Shards. We can’t do anything but hope for their safety, at the moment until we find a way to get through to them.
I have spoken to other governments and military leaders, they are reporting similar findings. America is currently contemplating an attack on the Shards, to break the effects of the light beams. At this point the remaining leadership is uncertain about what course of action to take. The leaders of foreign countries are reporting extensive power outages in the general area of the Shards. We are currently running on emergency power, which has been designed to give this bunker power for 30 days, until fuel supplies are exhausted.
All of Britain and large parts of Europe are dead zones. We can’t reach anyone, other than a few remote locations. All internet2 connectivity to these sites and many others is also out. Many of our links are going via redundant satellite services, however in some cases we can’t get in contact with anyone.
The worst prospect with these terrible events is that in New Zealand, based on what we have been able to determine and deduce from local and satellite feeds, is that over 90% of populated areas are contained within the light beams. Effectively 98% of our population is in the affected areas or surrounded unable to get out. We can’t do a damned thing about it, as soon as anything crosses the boundary line, it’s trapped. We have tried to pull people out with many different varied ideas, all of them have failed and in some cases more people have been trapped. We won’t give up trying. We don’t want to leave people behind.
World-wide the same stories are being told. In all cases the trapped population appears to cover extremely high percentage of the total population of the earth.
I don’t have any good news, other than to say that we are working with the Americans. I have urged the Americans to restrain from acting, in the hope that this event is some form of misguided study and communication attempt. The alternative would be mass slaughter until such time we can find the Shards’ weakness and how to communicate with them.
Lastly for those of you with loved ones, have faith that something good will happen and pray to your god that we find a way to defend ourselves or that the Shards come in peace.
After this briefing, everyone was stunned and didn’t know what to say or do. We have all seen the telecasts, seen what has happened and heard about many different attempts to try to rescue people.
Bubbles was a mess. She was crying, worrying about our friends, our family, our yet-to-be-born child and our future. I was thinking about the fact that if Sammy hadn’t grabbed us, we’d be trapped now.
We were all hoping that Sammy’s thoughts about communication were right, or that some other reason would prevail that would see life return to normal. Well something that we’d now consider normal.

We have learnt that most of the ‘free people’ are really trapped. Hundreds of people are stuck in no man’s land unable to do anything.
Sammy ordered the last helicopter to attempt a rescue. It crashed as soon as it crossed the threshold of the affected zone. It seems like the beam is directly linked to the Shards. No let up and no escape.
Communication with other nations is failing for some reason or another. We suspect that some equipment has failed and things just aren’t getting fixed or replaced. We like to think that our global networks are fault tolerant, but so many nodes have ceased to work and with no available staff to address network faults, it dies and so does our access to places.
The Americans reckon they can launch a guided missile and detonate it before it crosses into the dead zone. They are planning to try several different weapons. Such as a fragmentation device to pepper the Shards with lumps of metal at high speed; fuel-air device to superheat the area above the Shards’ ships; a pulse weapon to disrupt electronics; and finally, a nuclear warhead.
I have no idea what should be done. I guess I’m an optimistic person. I hope that faith prevails and the beam turns off, that the people who are released can tell us everything and we have nothing to worry about. Bubbles is definitely pessimistic. She wants to hurt them before they get us.

Sammy woke us up and told us to come into the conference room, the yanks were moving.
When we got there, we had three screens showing various American locations undergoing a build-up of military equipment. From what we had heard over the previous days they had lost a lot of gear. However it seems that they have managed to move most of the unaffected equipment around Washington, New York and Austin. To move all of this gear and men they must have been doing it all along whilst telling us that they hadn’t decided what to do.
