PLACE THUMB
Next Row Patt 17 sts, slip last 4 sts worked onto a stitch holder, patt to end.
Next Row Patt 13 sts, cast on 4 sts, patt to end.
Cont in rib as set until work measures 11⁄2in (4cm) from thumb opening, ending with a WS row.
Bind off loosely.
THUMB
Cast on 3 sts, with RS of work facing, k1, p2, k1 across 4 sts on stitch holder, cast on 3 sts. 10 sts.
Next Row K2, (p2, k2) twice.
Next Row P2, (k2, p2) twice.
Rep these 2 rows twice more.
Bind off loosely in rib.
Finish Your Wristwarmers
Using yarn A, join thumb seam. Join seam along bottom edge of thumb, matching ribs.
Join side seam.
Simple Mittens
Mittens are the simplest way to start knitting gloves and this stockinette stitch design couldn’t be easier – the hardest part is choosing which of the two color variations to make.

You Will Need For Multi-Color Mittens
Yarn
1 x 31⁄2oz (100g) hank of medium-weight (aran) multi-colored wool yarn (150yd/138m per hank) in pink/green/gold/ecru mix
Knitting Needles
• One pair size 5 (3.75mm)
• One pair size 7 (4.5mm)
Finished Measurements
To fit sizes S [M:L]; width around palm is 7 [71⁄2:8]in (18 [19:20.5]cm) and 7 [71⁄2:8]in (18 [19:20.5]cm) long from wrist
Gauge
18 sts and 24 rows to 4in (10cm) measured over st st (1 row k, 1 row p) using size 7 (4.5mm) needles
Knit Notes
Both pairs of mittens are worked in stockinette stitch with a snug-fitting cuff in k1, p1 rib worked on smaller needles.
The thumb on each mitten is shaped using M1, and the tops are decreased with ssk and k2tog.
Knit Your Right Multi-Color Mitten
Using size 5 (3.75mm) needles, cast on 32 [34:36] sts loosely.
Row 1 *K1, p1; rep from * to end.
Rep this row until rib measures 2in (5cm).
Change to size 7 (4.5mm) needles.
Work 2 rows in st st (1 row k, 1 row p), starting with a k row.**
SHAPE THUMB GUSSET
Next Row K16 [17:18], M1, k2, M1, k14 [15:16]. 34 [36:38] sts.
Work 3 rows in st st.
Next Row K16 [17:18], M1, k4, M1, k14 [15:16]. 36 [38:40] sts.
Work 3 rows in st st.
Next Row K16 [17:18], M1, k6, M1, k14 [15:16]. 38 [40:42] sts.
Work 3 rows in st st.
Next Row K16 [17:18], M1, k8, M1, k14 [15:16]. 40 [42:44] sts.
Purl 1 row.
THUMB
Next Row K26 [27:28] and turn.
Next Row Cast on 2 sts (using the cable cast-on), p12 (including 2 sts just cast on), turn and cast on 2 sts.
***Work 21⁄2 [23⁄4:3]in (6 [7:7.5]cm) on these 14 sts only for thumb, ending with a p row. Measure the knitting next to your thumb, placing the cast-on sts at base of thumb. You may need to add or subtract rows here to fit your thumb length.
Next Row K1, (k2tog, k1) 4 times, k1. 10 sts.
P 1 row.
Next Row K1, (k2tog) 4 times, k1. 6 sts.
Cut yarn and thread through rem sts. Pull up tight and fasten off. Join thumb seam.
With RS of work facing and using size 7 (4.5mm) needles, pick up and knit 2 sts across base of thumb, k across 14 [15:16] unworked sts on left-hand needle. 32 [34:36] sts.
****Cont in st st across all sts until mitten measures 51⁄2 [6:61⁄2]in (14 [15:16.5]cm) from top of rib, ending with a p row. Try the mitten on; it should be approx 11⁄2in (4cm) below the top of your longest finger. You may need to add or subtract rows here to fit your hand length.
SHAPE TOP
Next Row (K1, ssk, k10 [11:12], k2tog, k1) twice. 28 [30:32] sts.
