particular [pə'tɪkjʊlə], pleasure ['pleʒə], satisfied ['sætɪsfaɪd], instantly ['ɪnstəntlɪ], doubts [daʊts], wisdom ['wɪzdəm]
When a young woman in her “walking out” can only boast one not-quite-satisfied young man, it is no particular pleasure to her to see her escort cast sheep's eyes at a better-looking girl supported by two devoted swains.
At length there came a time which Sarah dreaded, and which she had tried to keep distant – the time when she had to make her choice between the two men. She liked them both, and, indeed, either of them might have satisfied the ideas of even a more exacting girl. But her mind was so constituted that she thought more of what she might lose, than of what she might gain; and whenever she thought she had made up her mind she became instantly assailed with doubts as to the wisdom of her choice.
Always the man whom she had presumably lost (все время тот, кого она, вероятно, потеряла = с которым ей, вероятно, предстояло расстаться; to presume – /пред/полагать) became endowed afresh with a newer and more bountiful crop of advantages (опять делался /в ее глазах/ одаренным все новыми и более многочисленными достоинствами; to endow – одарять, наделять /чем-л./; afresh – снова; fresh – свежий; новый; new – новый; незнакомый; bountiful – щедрый; богатый, обильный; bounty – щедрость; crop – урожай; обилие, масса; advantage – преимущество; достоинство, плюс) than had ever arisen from the possibility of his acceptance (чем /те, что/ проистекали из возможности его принятия = чем те, которыми он обладал, если бы она выбрала его; ever – всегда; когда-либо; to arise – возникать; проистекать /из чего-л./; acceptance – принятие, прием; to accept – принимать, брать /предложенное/). She promised each man that on her birthday she would give him his answer (она обещала каждому /из них/, что в день своего рождения даст ответ; birth – рождение; day – день), and that day, the 11th of April, had now arrived (и этот день, одиннадцатое апреля, теперь настал; 11th = eleventh – одиннадцатое /число/; eleven – одиннадцать; to arrive – прибывать, приезжать; наступать /о времени, событии/). The promises had been given singly and confidentially (обещания /и раньше/ давались /каждому/ отдельно и по секрету; confidential – конфиденциальный, секретный; доверительный), but each was given to a man who was not likely to forget (но каждое /обещание/ давалось человеку, который /ничего/ не забывает; likely – вероятно, возможно; to forget – забывать). Early in the morning she found both men hovering round her door (рано утром она увидела, что оба кавалера топчутся у ее двери; to find – находить; заставать /где-л., за каким-л. занятием/; to hover – парить /о птице/; болтаться, слоняться). Neither had taken the other into his confidence (ни один не доверил другому своих помыслов; to take smb. into one's confidence – поведать кому-л. свои тайны, довериться кому-л.: «взять кого-л. в свое доверие»; confidence – доверие), and each was simply seeking an early opportunity of getting his answer (и каждый просто выжидал первой возможности получить ответ; simple – простой; to seek – искать; добиваться; early – ранний; близкий, скорейший), and advancing his suit if necessary (и начать приготовления к свадьбе, если необходимо; to advance – продвигать/ся/ вперед; содействовать, ускорять; suit – сватовство).
always ['ɔ:lw(e)ɪz], presumably [prɪ'zju:məblɪ], arisen [ə'rɪzən], answer ['ɑ:nsə], necessary ['nesəs(ə)rɪ]
Always the man whom she had presumably lost became endowed afresh with a newer and more bountiful crop of advantages than had ever arisen from the possibility of his acceptance. She promised each man that on her birthday she would give him his answer, and that day, the 11th of April, had now arrived. The promises had been given singly and confidentially, but each was given to a man who was not likely to forget. Early in the morning she found both men hovering round her door. Neither had taken the other into his confidence, and each was simply seeking an early opportunity of getting his answer, and advancing his suit if necessary.
