is science happening as the maternal hormones orchestrate the contractions, and signals are sent to the baby to descend. Not only is dilation directly related to these maternal hormones, but so is the opiate-like effect that can result in uninterrupted labor. For instance, the hormone oxytocin, or the “love hormone,” is released during sexual activity and pregnancy, and peaks during the descent of the baby out of the vagina. This hormone not only is responsible for uterine contractions but also triggers the feeling of love and altruism. Oxytocin is just one of four major hormones that are so brilliantly expressed in the laboring mechanism. As each woman understands the perfection of the system, she becomes more comfortable with trusting it.
Labor and Birth
I honor each and every mother who is brave and authentic in facing the rawness of her fears. I honor every woman who dares to dream of her heart’s desires. I honor every human being who is committed to birthing greatness in self. But how do we deal with the pain of any process?
Contraction by contraction is the answer. Knowing we are supported by our peers and a Power greater than ourselves is not only comforting but empowering. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of feeling supported during pregnancy and childbirth. I have seen mothers progressing steadily during labor and when the midwife, doula, or close friend arrives, their labor speeds up. The intensity and feeling of the unknown is more surmountable when those trusted are present, physically or spiritually.
