1.2 How To Use This Book

       QUOTE

A nursing or health care theorist quote gives a professional's perspective regarding the topic at hand; read this as you begin each new chapter and see whether your opinion matches or differs, or whether you are in need of further information.

       OBJECTIVES

These statements indicate the performance‐based, measurable objectives that are targeted for mastery upon completion of the chapter.

       OPENING SCENARIO

This mini case study with related critical thinking questions should be read prior to delving into the chapter; it sets the tone for the material to come and helps you identify your knowledge base and perspective. Discussion answers of the questions are included near the end of each chapter.

       CASE STUDIES

These short case studies with related questions present a beginning clinical nursing leadership or management situation calling for judgment, decision making, or analysis in solving an open‐ended problem. Familiarize yourself with the types of situations and settings you will later encounter in nursing practice and challenge yourself to devise solutions that will result in the best outcomes for all parties, within the boundaries of legal and ethical nursing practice.

       EVIDENCE FROM THE LITERATURE

Study these key evidence findings from nursing and health care research, theory, and the literature. Ask yourself how they will influence your nursing practice. Do you see ways in which your nursing could be affected by these evidence findings? Do you agree with the implications identified by the author?

       CRITICAL THINKING EXERCISES

Ethical, cultural, spiritual, legal, delegation, and performance improvement considerations are highlighted in these exercises. Before beginning a new chapter, page through and read the Critical Thinking Exercises. Jot down your comments or reactions, then see whether your perspective changes after you complete the chapter.

Interviews with nursing and many other interprofessional health care leaders and managers are included as well as interviews with hospital administration leaders, patients, family members, and others. As you read these interviews, ask yourself whether you had ever considered that individual's point of view on the given topic. How will knowing another person's point of view affect the care you deliver?

       DISCUSSION POINTS

These are critical thinking questions related to chapter content for discussion in student groups or the classroom.

       INFORMATICS

These include website exercises to develop the informatics skill of student, including one exercise that takes the student to the Quality and Safety in Nursing (QSEN) website.

       LEAN BACK

These are questions that encourage reflective thinking on chapter content.
