Rimland, kes asutas nii Ameerika autismiühingu Autism Society of America kui ka autismiuuringute instituudi Autism Research Institute, oli selle valdkonna tähtsaimaks autoriteediks 1980.–1990. aastail kuni oma surmani 2006. aastal. Ta pani ka aluse biomeditsiinilisele sekkumisele, mida paljud lapsevanemad on kasutanud oma laste tervendamiseks. 1990ndate keskpaigaks oli ta näinud vaieldamatuid tõendeid autistlike laste arvu massilisest suurenemisest ning Rimland kirjutas juba 1995. aastal essee pealkirjaga „Is there an Autism Epidemic?” („Kas me seisame silmitsi autismiepideemiaga?”).37
