Education
I was told education is about teaching people how to think. I had to bump my head a few times to see what that meant. Here are some questions to better assess where you are concerning your education.
1.Is your institution or school’s department the right environment for you to develop?
a. I am not in school.
b. I go just to get my degree.
c. It has my major.
d. Yes, it is one of the best schools for my field.
e. Yes, my department, people, and opportunities
fit me perfectly.
2.Are your passions, interests, or strengths the main factor in your choice of a major?
a. No.
b. I am doing it for the money or because some else
said it is a good idea.
c. Sort of… It is interesting.
d. I think I will enjoy it.
e. I LOVE MY MAJOR! THIS IS WHAT I WAS
BORN TO DO!
3.Are you taking classes that will prepare you for the industry in which you plan to work?
a. No.
b. I believe that is why my advisor picked
my classes.
c. I think so.
d. Duh! That is the point of college, right?
e. Yes, my classes align with career goals.
4.Outside of your requirements for graduation, are you taking classes that you enjoy?
a. I am not in school.
b. My classes are boring.
c. My classes are okay.
d. I am somewhat interested in them.
e. I love my classes.
5.Do you maintain a 3.3 or higher GPA?
a. Uh, no. Less than a 3.0
b. 3.0 - 3.3
c. 3.3 - 3.5
d. 3.5 - 3.7
e, 3.7 - 4.0
6.Are you implementing a system to manage your time?
a. No.
b. I know the important things I have to do.
c. I usually have an idea of what I need to do.
d. I use an agenda and make to-do lists when I
need to.
e. I write down my tasks and use an agenda daily.
7.How would you describe how you organize yourself for class?
a. What do you mean?
b. I know where everything is.
c. I try to stay organized.
d. I have a folder for each class.
e. I keep my notes, handouts, assignments, and
anything else related to class in place and ready.
Experience
Books alone will not do, so…
1.Are you in, or planning to be on, the executive board of an organization?
a. I don’t do stuff like that.
b. I am thinking about it.
c. If I am selected, I will.
d. If that is what it takes to get ahead.
e. Definitely.
2.Are you involved in a club that will prepare you for your career?
a. No.
b. Still trying to figure it out what my career
will be.
c. Yes, I am involved in one.
d. Yes, I am involved in a few organizations that
expose me to a couple of my career options.
e. Yes, I am also on the executive board of one.
3.Are you involved in an organization that does things you enjoy doing?
a. No.
b. Haven’t found one yet.
c. Yes.
d. Yes, I am involved in a few.
e. Yes, I am also on the executive board.
4.Do you regularly attend events and conferences?
a. No.
b. Only when I must.
c. Yes.
d. Yes, I am trying to take advantage of everything
this place has to offer.
e. Yes, I look for events, take notes, and network.
5.Are you strategic about whom you network with?
a. What? I can get money?!
b. If you tell me about them, I will try to get
into one.
c. I have my eyes set on one.
d. Yes.
e. Yes, and they are preparing me for my
career goal.
6.Are you participating in any programs during your summer break?
a. No.
b. I may get a job, most likely one that is not
focused on developing my career.
c. If the right opportunity presents itself, I will.
