      Relationships

      This is one of the most overlooked aspects of becoming successful. People who step up their game do so with, help from others.

      1.Do you purposefully try to create a pleasant impression on everyone you meet?

      a. No.

      b. When I am in the mood.

      c. Only certain people I like.

      d. I just try to be nice.

      e. Yes. I never know who might be a blessing.

      2.Are you intentional about building relationships with faculty and staff?

      a. Never.

      b. When I have to.

      c. When I need a favor or a break.

      d. Every now and then.

      e. I make an effort to develop

       strategic relationships.

      3.Are you good at small talk?

      a. I don’t like talking to people.

      b. No.

      c. I can do it with friends or family.

      d. Yes, I am okay.

      e. Yes, I can talk to anyone.

      4.Do you have faculty and staff who look out for you on campus?

      a. No one knows me on campus.

      b. Someone may do something kind for

       me randomly.

      c. Yes, there is someone who makes sure that I am

       doing well.

      5.Are you strategic about with whom you network?

      a. Networking? What is that?

      b. If they are near me I may speak.

      e. Yes, it is the first step before applying.

      2.How do you research your opportunities?

      a. Conduct an online search about it.

      b. Visit their website.

      c. Talk to people who are connected to

       the opportunity.

      d. Collecting notes from various sources.

      e. All the above.

      3.Do you tailor all your application materials to the opportunity you are going after?

      a. What do you mean by tailor?

      b. No, I don’t have time for that.

      c. Sometimes I change a few things here and there.

      d. Some of the materials, but not all.

      e. Yes, every application I submit is tailored to the

       opportunity’s desires.

      4.Do you have an elevator speech?

      a. What is that?

      b. No.

      c. Something like that. I have a few things I

       normally say to people.

      d. Yes, I have a well-practiced one.

      e. Yes, and I tailor it to each situation.

      5.Do you speak their language (the jargon of that specific industry) when presenting yourself to an opportunity?

      a. Huh?

      b. I just tell them that I am a great person.

      c. I tell them what I have done in the past.
