The Merchant and several other people now interceded and asked him to accept the amount he had, and the owner finally agreed. The ʿUmdah meanwhile vowed that he would never play that game again; playing with adders, he said, was safer than using a billiard cue.

قال عيسى بن هشام: وجلس العمدة بعد ذلك لا هم له إلا صرف همه بالشرب فما زال يطلب وصاحب البار يجود عليه حتى انتشى من العقار وانتهى صاحبه من القمار وقد قام منه يزعم أنه خسر فيه ثلاثة جنيهات ويظهر لصاحبه التأسف والتأفف فقال له: دعك بالله من هذا الأسف فالضائع ضائع ومصيبك على كل حال أخف من مصيبتي ثم ناوله كأسًا وبينا هما يشربان إذا بالخليع قد عاد إليهما هاشًا باشًا فرحًا مرحًا يقول لهما:
الخليع أشرق أنسنا وسعدت ليلتنا وطاب وقتنا وأسأل الله تعالى أن يطيل ليلنا ويبعد نهارنا فقد تم مرادنا وهلم بنا.
العمدة ونحن نسأل الله أن يقصر ليلنا ويدني نهارنا فاقعد معنا نقصص عليك ما دهانا في غيابك ثم ما زالا يقصان عليه وهو يحملق فيهما حتى صار عرض يمينه طولا وقد تدلت شفته ولعبت أرنبة أنفه.
الخليع ويلي فأنا الملوم إذ تركتكما فوقع لكما ما وقع في غيابي ولكن قدر الله لكما ولطف بكما أما أنا فمصيبتي الآن أكبر وأعظم فماذا أقول وماذا أفعل وكيف أدفع وبماذا أعتذر وقد أتممت الأمر واستحضرت المراد ومجلس الأنس في انتظاركما؟
التاجر الأمر أيسر مما تخشى فما يفوتنا الليلة ندركه الليلة الآتية.
الخليع هذا شيء لا يدرك في كل حين فهذه المرة بيضة الديك لبيضة الخدر وكيف يؤجل هذا المجلس وقد مضى قطع من الليل عظيم:
كيف الرجوع بها وحول قبابها
سمر الرماح يملن للاصغاء؟
فخلصاني ناشدتكما الله مما أنا فيه وانقذاني من هذه الورطة العظيمة.
ʿĪsā ibn Hishām said: The ʿUmdah sat down, his only concern being to rid himself of his anxieties with drink. He kept asking, and the bar owner kept responding generously to his requests until he was drunk as a lord. Meanwhile the Merchant had finished his card game. He got up, claiming that he had lost three pounds, and made it clear to the ʿUmdah how much he regretted what had happened. “For heaven’s sake, stop feeling so sorry for yourself!” the ʿUmdah told him. “At least the loser loses. Your misfortunes are not as bad as mine.” He handed the Merchant a glass. While they were drinking, the Playboy came hurrying back all excited. He told them:
Playboy It’s time for our intimate little gathering. The night is blessed, the timing is right. Now I ask God to prolong this night for us and keep daylight far away. Our plans are complete. Let’s go!
ʿUmdah For our part, we ask God to shorten the night and bring daylight as soon as possible! Sit down, and we’ll tell you what has happened to us while you were away.
As they both told him what had happened, he stared at them—right arm outstretched, lips drooping, and nostrils flared.
