O ile w epokach wcześniejszych figura ta stanowiła reifikację określonych wyobrażeń kulturowych, o tyle w wieku XVII zyskuje rysy realistycznie potraktowanej kobiety z marginesu – starej wariatki i pijaczki Barbary Claes z Haarlemu. Staje się bardziej postacią rzeczywistą niż wyobrażoną, bardziej cielesną niż zaprogramowanym argumentem retorycznym. To oczywiście proces dyskretny, który nie demitologizuje tej postaci nagle ani w całości, niemniej rozpoczyna się on właśnie w epoce baroku.
